Killing the Orphan Spirit
Do you struggle with feelings of inadequacy? Are you compelled to strive to get anything? Do you compare yourself to others? Do you compete with others? Do you do things to receive validation? Are you haunted by rejection and failure? If you said yes to any of these questions, please continue to read below.
Some time ago, I was dealing with feelings of not being worthy enough. But, God began to show me that the enemy had planted these feelings of unworthiness in my mind. I have always found myself striving and working harder for the next big thing. I thought I had to work hard to receive the love of the Father. But God showed me that He loved me just the way I was and so I began to fall deeper in love with the Father. You don’t have to be fatherless to find yourself gripped with the debilitating “spirit of an orphan.” Those who are entrapped in this disposition are always striving to prove their worth. They believe that everything is a fight and are fearful that their efforts will never be adequate.
Individuals that feel they are spiritual orphans often get trapped into performance mode and they believe that advancement only comes through hard work. This common outlook obscures the significance of a relationship with God the Father and our inheritance.
If you said yes to any of the earlier questions then you have an orphan spirit. Are you familiar with the story of one of the King’s sons, named Mephibosheth? He was a crippled orphan and he was forced to contend with the fact that there was something more.
An incredible blessing was being given to him. We see in 2 Samuel 9: 5–10, “Then David summoned Ziba, Saul’s servant, and said to him, ‘I have given your master’s grandson everything that belonged to Saul and his family. You and your sons and your servants are to farm the land for him and bring in the crops, so that your master’s grandson may be provided for. And Mephibosheth, grandson of your master, will always eat at my table.’”
There is a great ending to this story. In 2 Samuel 9:11, it says that David was restoring the identity and value of Mephibosheth. The gracious king not only reinstated his fortune but also treated him as one of his family members. “So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table like one of the king’s sons.” I love the prophetic meaning of this story. Like Mephibosheth, God wants to restore our identity and our inheritances. But we must be ready to take a seat at His table. Don’t allow yourself to be gripped by an orphan spirit for another day. God has so much more in store for you!
When God is doing something new in my life or bringing me to a new level, He always sends me a revelation and a mentor with wisdom so that I can saturate myself in the Word and receive teaching on the area where He wants to set me free. I came across the book Killing the Orphan Spirit by Jason John Cowart. Let me tell you, it is jammed pack with scriptures and revelations that will take a hold of you and turn around your thinking. I would read it over and over again, because it all begins in the way we think. We need to meditate on the word of God day and night to activate this truth in our lives.
In his book, the author points out that a part of why it is so easy to believe the worst that people say about us is due to the fact that by nature we are defensive creatures. We are fearful of things that will harm us. We expect negativity, and because of this we are predisposed to take the words we hear and our experiences and form our beliefs. This is why it is so hard for people to receive a compliment. But, we can change what we believe about ourselves. Remember, we are going to experience loads of negativity over the course of our lives. But we need to believe what the word of God says about us.
Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Colossians 3:2 tells, “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.”
Make it a must to study the Word each day. I have to constantly remind myself that this is the only way to defeat the giants in our lives. I usually have a list of scriptures on a topic and began to read them out loud and meditate on them. Remember, everything has to line up with the word of God. If it doesn’t, it has no place in your life and holds no merit. In 2 Corinthians, it says “We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.”
Please get the book Killing the Orphan Spirit. I am inviting you to change your thought process by choosing a better word. I hope you will get a copy of this book and read it over and over again with the word of God. I guarantee it will change your life as it did mine.
